Cumberland RI House Fire : Cumberland, RI – On May 3oth at 7:20 pm ladder-1 from the Valley Falls section of Cumberland was dispatch to 35 Hopkins Terrace for smoke coming from an air conditioner on the second floor of a single family home. While responding addition 911 calls were sent to dispatch for a house fire at that address, a still alarm was struck sending additional 4 engines from the Cumberland stations and a ladder from Central Falls Fire Department. When ladder-1 arrived heavy smoke could be seen coming from the second floor of the home. The family was on scene to tell fire personnel that everyone was out of the house and the fire was on the second floor. Fire fighters attempted to fight the fire from the interior but the fire spread into the attic spaces and thru the roof which made for a smoky and hot fire that force the fire fighters from the second floor, command order a defensive attack for the safety of all personnel. Hand lines applying form and the ladder truck was able to knock the fire down within a short time allowing firefighters to reenter the home to extinguish the hot spots and apply salvage covers to help protect the family’s belongings. Smoke could be seen for miles after the fire broke thru the roof. Homeowners told fire personnel that they seen smoke coming from the air conditioner in the second floor bedroom window just prior to the fire and called 911, while they exited the home some neighbors could see smoke and fire coming from the second floor bedroom and also called 911. One firefighter was treated on scene for minor burns he sustained while fighting the fire from the interior of the home. The Providence Canteen was on scene to provide refreshments for rehab to the fire personnel. -David Mowry
